Chapter Nine

Julia

I stand at baggage claim, waiting on the belt to start moving with luggage from our flight. My back started aching with two hours left, so to say I’m thankful to be off the plane is an understatement. My pregnancy has been fairly textbook easy so far. Some minor aches and pains as my body goes through the expected changes thanks to growing a tiny human.

“Everything okay?” Beckett asks, resting a hand against my lower back.

“I’ll be fine, just need a good night’s sleep and I’ll be like new,” I assure him.

“Is your back still bothering you?”

“Yeah, but it will be fine,” I tell him again.

He steps behind me and presses his thumbs into the muscles on either side of my spine, and the instant relief it gives me has me melting into him. “Feel, okay?” he asks, his lips next to my ear, which sends an entirely different chill down my spine and straight to my core.

“Yes, don’t stop,” I tell him, and he does as asked.

We stay put in this position as the luggage starts coming out. I notice one of our bags early, but Beckett doesn’t move to retrieve it, allowing it to circle back around so that he can keep pressure on my back.

I step out of his embrace, testing if the pain is going to return or if I’ll be okay for a little while. “The pain is gone, for now. Let’s get the bags and get out of here. I think being at your parents’ house will allow me to relax,” I tell him, and he agrees. I stay with our carry-on bags while he steps up to the belt and grabs the suitcases as they come around.

“I can’t believe we made it out of there without you being recognized,” I tell Beckett once we’re in the rental car and on our way to his parents.

“I think one couple recognized me. The guy made eye contact with me and his got all big, like he knew who I was but was too nervous to come talk to me.”

“Yeah, you’re so intimidating.” I chuckle. My husband is anything but intimidating.

Beckett makes his way through the streets and to his hometown. I still can’t believe he convinced his parents to stay home and we’d rent a car from the airport. We need one, especially with a large group of our friends coming to visit us in a few weeks. I can’t wait to show my girls around and to just decompress with everyone after the whirlwind season the guys had, especially with the exciting ending with them taking home the Cup.

We pull into Filip and Vera’s driveway, and before Beckett has brought the car to a complete stop, I see Vera come out the door. Her excitement is practically radiating off of her in waves.

“Beckett! Julia!” she cries once we’re out of the car. She goes first to her son, wrapping him in a motherly hug. I walk around the front of the rental car and just watch the love between mother and son.
